Become A Mentor

Project Leadership welcomes applications from local community members to become a mentor to a Twenty-first Century Scholar. It is a rewarding and life-changing experience. Before completing an application, please review the guidelines below as a first step in determining if a Project Leadership mentorship is a good fit for you.

Qualifications:

  • Sincere desire to help a student reach his or her personal and academic goals.
  • Ability to communicate with teenagers openly and nonjudgmentally.
  • Strong listening skills.
  • Able to establish a relationship based on equal responsibility and mutual respect.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives.
  • Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural and racial backgrounds.

Time Commitement
A minimum of one year with up to one hour of contact per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Make a minimum one-year commitment to develop and maintain a mentor relationship with a student.
  • Attend mentor orientation and training session before meeting mentee and participate in ongoing mentor training during the mentorship.
  • Meet with the student on a regular basis to establish working relationship and to support them in their academic goals.
  • Keep time logs through a monthly mentor form and other information as requested by mentor coordinator.

Application process:

  • Complete an online mentor application or call Project Leadership for a packet.
  • Read and sign the mentor agreement section of the application that outlines program responsibilities.
  • Provide Project Leadership with a copy of your driver's license, auto insurance.
  • Conduct an interview with Project Leadership staff member to help best match you with a student.
