Become A Mentor
Project Leadership welcomes applications from local community members to become a mentor to a Grant County student. It is a rewarding and life-changing experience. Before completing an application, please review the guidelines below as a first step in determining if a Project Leadership mentorship is a good fit for you.
Qualifications:
- Sincere desire to help a student reach his or her personal and academic goals.
- Ability to communicate with teenagers openly and nonjudgmentally.
- Strong listening skills.
- Able to establish a relationship based on equal responsibility and mutual respect.
- Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives.
- Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural and racial backgrounds.
Time Commitement
A minimum of one year with up to one hour of contact per week.
Responsibilities:
- Make a minimum one-year commitment to develop and maintain a mentor relationship with a student.
- Attend mentor orientation and training session before meeting mentee and participate in ongoing mentor training during the mentorship.
- Meet with the student on a regular basis to establish working relationship and to support them in their academic goals.
- Keep time logs through a monthly mentor form and other information as requested by mentor coordinator.
Application process:
- Complete an online mentor application or call Project Project at 765-651-0650 for a packet.
- Read and sign a mentor agreement that outlines the responsibilities of the program.
- Complete a mentor criminal background check. The form is available here online. Submit it to Project Leadership or to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
- Conduct interview with Project Leadership staff member so that we can learn more about you to select a student match.
