LESSON 2.6 - Scholarships: Now

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT:

For this lesson, Project Leadership staff can visit to discuss the importance of financial aid, the state of Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars and assist students in creating a Scholar Track account. Students will be presented with an overview of the 21st Century Scholars program and how it can help a student pay for the cost of college tuition.
 

The presentation will engage students in exploring how financial aid can affect the total cost of attendance in different ways for different students. This will serve as a basic introduction to the concepts behind “net price” that will be explored again later. In this activity, students receive award letters from different colleges and see how the availability of financial aid helps define which school might be the best financial fit.

DIGGING IN:

After the opening presentation, Project Leadership will provide all students with Scholar Track overview sheets. These will not have a lot of information, because students have not yet begun work on the Scholar Success Program. Still, they will be important during the process of creating Scholar Track accounts. It may be a good idea to collect and keep these forms for the students, because they will contain the information needed to log back into their accounts to log activities later.

INTO ACTION:

All students will be working to log Scholar Success Program activities. Though the Scholar Success Program is required for 21st Century Scholars, it is a program that is encouraged for all students.
 

After assisting students with setting up their Scholar Track accounts, Project Leadership staff will assist students with logging their first Scholar Track activity: Complete a Career Interest Inventory. Logging this activity involves answering a few questions about the activity to demonstrate completion. Project Leadership staff will walk the class through this process together.
 

Ahead of this period, students will need to have devices available. Access to an email address can also be useful, but it is not required.
